I don't know how to start talking through this so I'm just going to start typing and I'll go back for revisions later. The first reason I'm making this website is it seems like fun. It seems like a nice creative outlet that is software related. It's also going to serve as sort of a journaling thing and get me more used to talking about myself and my interests. From what I've seen the indie web seems like it represents some of the best that the internet and the tech space have to offer. Sort of like an ideal version of what I want from my technology and my internet experience.
I've loved clicking through people's little websites. The design work that some people do is truly incredible. It's in such start contrast to what exists on the mainstream web, where everything feels a little sterile and optimized. Every single site has it's own look, they're structured around what the creator likes. There's a really nice sense of community that I wouldn't have expected too. Guestbooks are so cool to me! I love how people link to other indie sites they think are cool or that their friends made. Webrings are so much fun! It's a cool way to hold a community.
I'm a very isolated person. I'm bad at talking to people, bad at reaching out to people. Seeing how the indie web community works, how welcoming I've seen people be (So many people have resources on their site to help other people get started!) makes me feel like this could be a good place for me. This is a community that I want to be involved in. I say I like open-source work, I like seeing people make their own stuff, that the process of making something is worth something outside of the end product. I want to start putting my money where my mouth is and contributing to the communities upholding the principles that I believe in.
